P is for Pain

Pain

Pain is the only sensation
that cannot be recreated
by the mind
or so they tell me.
It is a psychological
safety mechanism
much like a seat belt
on the tea cup coaster
at Disney.
The most horrible
moment of your life
cannot be relived
fully again,
for fear of the damage
done double.

The sensation is gone,
empty or full
I ache and think
that is a type of pain,
as defined by
the AMA.
Is that right?
ache throb stab
all signs of a heart attack-
all signs that something’s gone
awry again.

But if you try
to bring it home,
remember too much,
the wound is torn
open anew
and the pain returns
as if it never left
you.

For the month of April I’ve committed to writing 26 poems, falling into the Alphabet.  To learn more about my project, check out my introduction.  To learn more about the A-to-Z Challenge visit www.a-to-zchallenge.com.

  1. That was delightful. On of the most valuable things I have ever learned is that the opposite of pain is not pleasure, it is numbness, a complete absence of feeling. I guess some of the military guys like to say pain is a sign of life. That’s rings true, pain is proof that you are alive.
