S is for Signs

I speak with my hands when I’m tired
too tired to think i retreat into muscle memory
yes. no. stop. please. and. thank you.
what more do you want?
an auditory response?
from the hearing deaf girl
half dead with insomnia
half deaf with infections
i inherited sick ears
along with highland cheeks
from a grandmother whom doesn’t always like me
in part because I always sign
to her
so deaf the doorbell doesn’t ring
in ears filled with aids
though she can hear grandchildren sneaking
imported chocolates upstairs
those are my memories
when you see me speak.

For the month of April I’ve committed to writing 26 poems, falling into the Alphabet.  To learn more about my project, check out my introduction.  To learn more about the A-to-Z Challenge visit www.a-to-zchallenge.com.
