X Marks the Spot

X Marks the Spot

for Sgt. J.J. Sr., our friend

X marks the spot where you’re laid to rest
Not under the headstone where your uniform sits
Your mother goes there still
Puts flowers you hate on the government grave
But friends are friends until the very end
And even then, we’d break the rules for you
Body snatchers you could say
We promised her we’d take you to the grave
Where you were meant to be laid, and so we did
A can of ashes and army tape
Hiked past the peaks, down the river beds
Hiked so deep that my feet still bleed
when I follow the map we drew
to the x that is you.

For the month of April I’ve committed to writing 26 poems, falling into the Alphabet.  To learn more about my project, check out my introduction.  To learn more about the A-to-Z Challenge visit www.a-to-zchallenge.com.
